Light Therapy

Lights are used to repigment the skin. Light therapy uses excimer laser to treat vitiligo. For the procedure, the patient may have to sit in a light box or receive excimer laser treatments. Light box will be able to treat widespread vitiligo whereas; laser will only be able to treat small area. Lasers are effective on face and less effective on hands and feet. Studies found that excimer lasers are effective for 70% of the patients.
The main disadvantage with light therapy is that, the results are not long lasting. In most cases, the results disappear within 1 year after completing the treatment. The treatment requires time commitment. The patient will have to continue the treatment for several weeks. Lasers are also applied in combination with topical corticosteroid.
